The twin facility would eclipse existing clean energy projects at a time of uncertainty for the industry ahead of Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

Oregon regulators have approved plans for the country’s largest solar and storage project.

Pine Gate Renewables said it plans to build a 1,200 megawatt solar facility in tandem with a 1,200 megawatt battery storage project in central Oregon. The North Carolina-based developer will begin designing the project and purchasing equipment next year for the Sunstone Solar facility. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026.

The 9,400-acre project was approved last month by the Oregon Energy Facility Siting Council. The project will be built in Morrow County, which was home to the last operating coal plant in Oregon.

“Oregon’s energy facility permitting process is one of the most rigorous in the entire country,” said Pine Gate Renewables CEO Ben Catt in a statement. “The recent unanimous permit approval is a testament to the way our team worked with stakeholders to provide a win-win for Oregon and the Morrow County community.”
