Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado on Wednesday briefly floated and then quickly punctured her own trial balloon as a potential Interior secretary in a second Trump administration.

In what started as an off-the-cuff answer to a reporter’s question at the Republican National Convention, and ended as a brief case study in misunderstanding, Boebert offered herself as a good choice to head the 70,000-employee Interior Department.

Boebert seemingly put her name in play when she was walking by a booth at the convention in Milwaukee staffed by a team from Native America Calling, a radio call-in and podcast operation that focuses on Native American issues. A reporter called out to her, and she stopped to talk.
