Lawmakers spotlight need for disaster reforms as Washington floods

As record flooding continued through the week in Washington state, lawmakers called for increased investment in emergency management and weather forecasting.

The state’s congressional delegation has been speaking out about the floods on Capitol Hill and when touring the damage, calling for reforms to the federal government’s process to prepare for natural disasters.

The discussion comes as both the administration and Congress consider overhauling the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other disaster programs.

President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration for the state Monday. Still, the state’s overwhelmingly Democratic congressional delegation has kept pressure on FEMA to invest fully in upcoming recovery efforts.
