Louisiana is poised to protect the “freedom of choice” to buy gasoline vehicles against any state restrictions based on poor air quality.
A bill awaiting action from Republican Gov. Jeff Landry would bar Louisiana agencies from restricting vehicles based on their fuel source. It also would block state agencies from limiting sales of internal combustion engines based on “air quality challenges.”
The bill, which unanimously passed the Senate this month after clearing the House on a 98-4 vote, was pushed by a motorcyclist group — the Louisiana chapter of American Bikers Active Toward Education, or ABATE. It drew support, too, from Chevron and the Louisiana Oil and Gas Association.
Similar laws have been enacted in Kansas, where Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly signed the legislation in April, and in Ohio, where the bill was signed by Republican Gov. Mike DeWine in December.
