A monthslong clash between two key GOP constituencies is coming to a head as House Republicans look to pass updates to critical farm policies.

Make America Healthy Again advocates are promising to complicate GOP lawmakers’ efforts to pass a farm bill this year if it includes protections for pesticide makers.

Agriculture groups have been pushing for a provision that would block states from requiring pesticide-makers to label their packaging in any way that differs from EPA guidance. Several farm-state Republicans are on board, led by House Agriculture Chair G.T. Thompson (R-Pa.), arguing that it will protect farmers’ access to key chemical tools as some states introduce stricter label mandates.

But opponents within MAHA counter that the provision would shield pesticide companies even when lawsuits allege their products are linked to cancer and other diseases. For example, glyphosate, a key ingredient in the pesticide Roundup, has been linked to non-Hodgkin lymphoma but is not considered by the EPA to be risky to human health when used as directed.
