Facebook parent company Meta announced Friday morning that it would financially support the maintenance and creation of 6.6 gigawatts of nuclear energy on the U.S. grid by 2035 — equivalent to the power consumption of 5.4 million homes.

The tech giant said the move will supply the American artificial intelligence industry, which is highly energy-intensive and a national security priority for the Trump administration.

Meta will sponsor the development of advanced reactors from Bill Gates-backed TerraPower and Sam Altman-supported Oklo, where Energy Secretary Chris Wright previously served on the board of directors. Additionally, it will help independent power producer Vistra keep three existing nuclear plants in service.

“Our agreements with Vistra, TerraPower, Oklo, and Constellation make Meta one of the most significant corporate purchasers of nuclear energy in American history,” Joel Kaplan, Meta’s chief global affairs officer, said in a press release. “These projects are going to create thousands of skilled jobs in Ohio and Pennsylvania, add new energy to the grid, extend the life of three existing nuclear plants, and accelerate new reactor technologies.”
