Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey is investigating a pair of firms that advise large investors — complaining that they’ve recommended proposals that would force companies to adopt carbon disclosure mandates and “aggressive climate activism policies.”

The move is the latest maneuver in a nationwide Republican campaign to block the use of environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles, which GOP officials say threaten the fossil fuel industry.

Bailey said Friday his office has launched an investigation and is filing lawsuits that ask a court to enforce its demands for documents from the shareholder advisory firms, Glass Lewis and Institutional Shareholder Services.

Bailey said the demand seeks information related to the firms’ promotion of “radical” agendas, including ESG and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
