President Donald Trump’s war of words with tech mogul Elon Musk heated up Tuesday as Senate Republicans passed a massive reconciliation package.
Musk has been on a rampage against the legislation, full of tax cuts and billions of dollars for immigration enforcement, as budget estimates show it ballooning the national debt. But Trump again this week sought to pin Musk’s opposition on the bill’s phasing out of tax credits for electric vehicles, which could damage the Tesla CEO’s business interests.
“He’s upset that he’s losing his EV mandate. He’s very upset about things,” Trump told reporters before boarding Marine One on the White House South Lawn. “He could lose a lot more than that. I can tell you right now, Elon can lose a lot more than that.”
Musk once was a close ally of the president, leading the so-called Department of Government Efficiency that searched for waste and fraud across the government early on in this administration. But Musk left that post in May and his relationship with Trump has since frayed.
