A trio of House committees will hold their first hearings of the year this week, focusing on topics like renewing the 2017 tax law and telework for federal employees.
Republicans maintained a slim House majority in last year’s elections. Both parties in recent weeks have been ironing out committee rosters, as well as debating priorities and policies.
Now, panels will start the process of carrying those priorities out, including Ways and Means, Oversight and Government Reform, and Transportation and Infrastructure. Senate committees are focusing this week on President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks.
Ways and Means is playing a starring role in the GOP’s push to pass either one or two bills under the budget reconciliation process, which would bypass the need for a Senate supermajority. Extending most of the provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which are due to expire at the end of this year, is the central feature of those plans.
