TRENTON, New Jersey — Gov. Mikie Sherrill is expected to sign a bill Tuesday to increase transmission-scale storage in the state.
The legislation, S.B. 3819, loosens eligibility requirements to expand the number of projects that can qualify for a Board of Public Utilities incentive program while also extending the deadline for awards.
“It’s a good, good thing for ratepayers, but we’ve got a long way to go,” said state Sen. Bob Smith (D-Middlesex), chair of the Environment and Energy Committee, adding that Sherrill would sign the bill Tuesday.
More context: Energy issues — especially utility rates — have been a priority for the new governor. New Jerseyans faced the highest increase in utility rates last year, according to a new congressional report. Sherrill’s first executive order aimed to offset increases in utility rates on customer bills, and her second executive order directed the BPU to accelerate solar and battery storage.
