Alaska will be the home of a new national foundation charged with raising money for ocean cleanup and helping curb the nation’s plastic trash crisis.
The Marine Debris Foundation, created by Congress in 2020, will be headquartered in Juneau, Alaska, Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) said Wednesday.

“There are only a few congressionally chartered foundations, and they have a strong history of becoming important, large enterprises that can employ thousands,” Sullivan said in a speech to a joint session of the Alaska Legislature. “Think the American Red Cross, the American Legion, the National Parks Foundation.”
The announcement marked a victory for the state’s junior senator, who had promoted the idea for the last two years. He called it “an exciting day for Alaska” and said the move would help make the state “a future intellectual research hub.”
