Citing the Trump administration’s efforts to roll back renewable energy, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said the state will appeal a court order requiring it to spell out the details of its landmark climate law.
Speaking to reporters Monday, Hochul, a Democrat, said she was unsure that New York Supreme Court Justice Julian Schreibman, the author of the decision, had “factored in a dramatic change in circumstances” that has occurred since 2019, when lawmakers passed legislation calling for steep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.
Chiefly, Hochul noted the Trump administration has cut off subsidies that could have bolstered renewable energy expansion.
“Without that support, the industries aren’t going to do it,” Hochul said. “How can I continue to put our eggs in that basket when the industries won’t even build it? I have to be realistic here and try to explain on appeal.”
