California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday said he’s had “very positive and constructive conversations” with the Trump administration this week to secure a reduced request for billions of dollars for wildfire recovery around Los Angeles.
Newsom, in Washington for meetings with administration officials, said he’s seeking a sharply pared-back request, having met resistance to an original ask of $33.9 billion.
The Democratic governor said he’s optimistic about the odds despite obvious political tension with the Republican administration and his own state’s Republican congressional delegation.
Newsom said the latest revision — for $15.7 billion — reflects discussions with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Small Business Administration.
