SACRAMENTO, California — Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday announced he had signed legislation to transition some neighborhoods around the state from natural gas to electricity.

Democratic State Sen. Dave Min’s S.B. 1221 directs the California Public Utilities Commission to work with the state’s three major investor-owned utilities to launch up to 30 pilot projects where it’s cost-effective for utilities to end gas service and transition customers to electric appliances.

The proposal takes a small stab at a central challenge of California’s climate transition, which is getting natural gas out of households without driving up costs for utility customers.

The legislation requires utilities to submit maps of their gas pipeline systems by July 1, 2025, including where they expect to replace aging pipes.
