NEW YORK — California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom assailed President Donald Trump’s assertion this week that global warming is a “con job.”

“What an abomination. What a fraud,” Newsom said Wednesday at a climate event hosted by The New York Times the day after Trump’s speech to the United Nations, which included a tirade against climate policies and climate science.

The Democratic governor — who has emerged as one of the leading voices on the left criticizing Trump and his policies — delivered a stinging rebuke to the president’s comments this week and to the Trump administration’s climate and environmental rollbacks more broadly.
