The Trump administration is again trawling for fresh ideas on how to boost the U.S. seafood industry and update how fisheries are managed.

Citing challenges from foreign competition to changing ocean conditions, NOAA Fisheries on Wednesday invited public comments on the “effort to revitalize” the nation’s seafood sector. The move comes amid mixed messages from Trump, who has simultaneously slashed agency staffing while issuing an executive order titled, “Restoring American Seafood Competitiveness.”

Trump’s executive order, issued in April, targeted for possible elimination regulations that “overly burden” the seafood industry and called for “less expensive and more reliable technologies,” among other areas. It follows a similar executive order and request for ideas that Trump issued in his first presidential term.

“Through our implementation of the President’s Executive Order, NOAA Fisheries is aiming to address the recent decline in fisheries landings and revenues,” Eugenio Piñeiro Soler, assistant administrator of NOAA Fisheries, said in a statement Tuesday.
