LONDON — The U.K.’s twin bans on fracking for gas on land and new exploration for fossil fuels in the North Sea will be enshrined in law under a new Energy Independence Bill.
The measures were announced at the king’s speech Wednesday morning.
A new Nuclear Regulation Bill will also underpin reforms that ministers hope will cut the time it takes to build reactors.
Alongside the long-expected bans, the Energy Independence Bill will include new legal measures to cut delays in building power lines, establish a Warm Homes Agency to roll out domestic solar and energy-efficiency measures, and provide a legal basis for new targeted support for poorer households with their energy bills.
