‘Not coming back’: Congress unlikely to return for disaster aid

Lawmakers from areas pummeled by Hurricane Helene and its deadly storm surge are making urgent calls for Congress to return from recess to approve new disaster aid.

But that push, following Congress’s decision to leave supplemental disaster dollars out of last week’s government funding patch, is already running into resistance from House Republican leaders.

“We’re not gonna come back,” said a House leadership aide granted anonymity to speak candidly.

The spending continuing resolution extended fiscal 2024 funding levels for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s main disaster account — about $20 billion — for the next three months.
