Park rangers and other agency employees have regularly marched in Pride parades held each June in cities across the country, but the National Park Service in internal documents said it will begin enforcing a policy that prohibits that practice.

In a major reversal, the National Park Service will no longer allow the agency’s employees to wear their uniforms at Pride parades.

NPS Deputy Director Frank Lands recently issued the directive to the agency’s nearly 20,000 employees.

In a May 9 memo obtained by E&E News, Lands said the agency had received “an increasing amount of requests from employees asking to participate in uniform in a variety of events and activities, including events not organized by the NPS, which potentially conflict with our uniform policy.”

While Lands did not make specific reference to Pride in his memo, a follow-up Q&A posted internally made clear that those events were included in the prohibition.
