The national Christmas tree, adorned with lights and ornaments in front of the White House during the holiday season, is an out-of-towner for the second year in a row.
The 35-foot red spruce is a gift to the National Park Service from the Forest Service. The Forest Service cut the tree in the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests in western Virginia.
It will be lit Thursday in an annual ceremony on the National Mall to kick off the holiday season.
This is the second time NPS has used a cut tree in as many years: A living white fir from Pennsylvania, planted in 2021, was removed in November of 2023 after contracting a fungal disease that causes needles to brown and fall.
