The National Park Service green-lighted a proposed miniature park to commemorate the Peace Corps, helping clear the path for its construction in Washington.
Following an environmental assessment and public comment period, NPS announced Friday that the construction of the 0.15-acre park would have no significant environmental impact and recommended it be created. This is a major hurdle cleared for the establishment of Peace Corp Commemorative Park, which was first authorized by Congress in 2014.
Also last week, the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts approved a final design for the park. But in order for the project to proceed, it needs final approval from the National Capital Planning Commission — and funding for the construction, which the nonprofit Peace Corps Commemorative Foundation is looking to raise.
“With the Park’s design process in its final stages, we turn our attention to raising the $5 million needed to put shovels in the ground, and look to our generous and dedicated community to get us to groundbreaking and make Peace Corps Park a reality,” the foundation wrote on its website following last week’s NPS and Fine Arts Commission approvals.
