Washington’s cherry blossom trees will likely hit their peak bloom between March 29 and April 1, the National Park Service announced Thursday.
Forecasters at The Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang predicted peak bloom will arrive several days later than the NPS outlook — between April 3 and April 7 — due to Washington experiencing one of its coldest winters in 20 years.
Whether the newspaper or park service horticulturalists are correct, the trees will likely be in flower during the annual Cherry Blossom Festival on the National Mall between March 20 to April 12.
Historically blooms have emerged as early as March 15, in 1990, and as late as April 18, in 1958, according to the park service.
