The Senate on Tuesday advanced the nomination of Ho Nieh to join the Nuclear Regulatory Commission with significant bipartisan support. A final vote is Wednesday.
Lawmakers voted 65-32 to wind down debate on the Southern Co. executive who has also been a senor staffer at the regulatory agency.
Several Democrats voted for cloture, including Environment and Public Works ranking member Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), who has questioned the White House’s increased oversight of independent agencies.
“He struck me as a expert and professional on the substance, and someone committed to the integrity of the NRC,” Whitehouse said Tuesday. “The agency badly needs both of those.”
