Environmental groups are asking a federal court to block the revival of the Palisades nuclear power plant in Michigan.
Beyond Nuclear, Don’t Waste Michigan and Michigan Safe Energy Future filed a lawsuit Monday challenging the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s decision clearing the way for Holtec International to put the plant back online, more than three years after it began the decommissioning process.
NRC had approved a shutdown certificate exemption that allowed Holtec to restart plant operations. Holtec announced in August the plant had officially transitioned from decommissioning to operations status, the first nuclear plant to do so in U.S. history.
The Palisades plant can now receive nuclear fuel and will be able to restart after it meets certain conditions. Once fully operational, it would supply power to more than 800,000 homes and businesses.
