Six houses have collapsed since May at Rodanthe, an unincoporated hamlet on Hatteras Island.

Part of a collapsed house can be seen rising about frothy surf at Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The Atlantic Ocean swallowed another unoccupied beach house Friday on North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

It is the 11th house to collapse on the 70-mile-long seashore over the past four years and the sixth house that has collapsed since May in Rodanthe, an unincorporated development on Hatteras Island.

National Park Service officials say efforts to clean up and haul away debris on Surf Side Drive were limited by ocean overwash that closed parts of North Carolina Highway 12. The state road has since reopened.

The beach in Rodanthe remains closed due to the debris. The service is also warning visitors to be aware of debris being spread by waves many miles south of Rodanthe.
