President Joe Biden’s nominee to oversee international environmental and ocean-related issues promised Thursday to make plastic pollution and illegal fishing top priorities if she gets the job.

At her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Kristen Sarri called the pollution caused by plastic a “pressing global issue” that needs immediate attention.

“If confirmed, I would work with federal agencies, Congress, stakeholders and other countries on a strong legally binding agreement to address the global plastic threat and to work to strengthen implementation of existing agreements and partnerships to address plastic and other types of pollution,” she said.
