A carbon removal startup backed by some of the world’s largest energy producers began operating a seawater-filtering facility Thursday designed to remove up to 1,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year from the ocean.
Captura’s direct ocean capture plant in Hawaii was developed in partnership with Equinor, Norway’s state-owned oil company.
Founded in 2021, Captura has already built two smaller pilot plants in California and now intends to build a commercial facility capable of removing tens of thousands of tons of CO2 annually.
“We’re ready to build a plant at just about any size,” CEO Steve Oldham said in an interview.
