The Trump administration is reinforcing its threat to conduct mass firings of federal workers, issuing guidelines to agencies for conducting layoffs during a government shutdown.
The Office of Personnel Management on Sunday published updated instructions, urging agency officials to prepare “decisional documents” to support widespread cuts and adding provisions to allow employees implementing a reduction in force to keep working during a potential shutdown.
Congress is just two days from triggering a potential shutdown of the federal government, with lawmakers still split over how to keep agencies running. Congressional leaders are set to meet at the White House later Monday.
The Office of Management and Budget last week issued a memo to federal agencies directing them to consider reduction-in-force notices for all staffers in programs, projects or activities where discretionary funding will lapse on Oct. 1, no alternative funds are available and the program doesn’t align with President Donald Trump’s priorities.
