The Energy and Natural Resources Committee weighed bills from both parties, but leaders are divided on how to make some of them law.

A Senate Energy and Natural Resources subcommittee on Tuesday considered a tranche of public lands and wildfire bills in one of the committee’s most significant legislative moves this Congress.

After focusing mostly on nominees and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, panel members have been wondering how much else they will accomplish legislatively.

A skirmish on the Senate floor Tuesday between ENR Chair Mike Lee (R-Utah) and ranking member Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) shed new light on the issue.

Items on the hearing agenda included land exchanges, stepped up forest management, proposals to add new wilderness areas and legislation to permanently protect designated roadless areas in national forests.
