Former Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola entered Alaska’s U.S. Senate race Monday, deploying a centrist message in her challenge to Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan.

Peltola, who reportedly considered running for Senate or governor, is sticking to the “fish, family and freedom” motto that brought her to a surprise victory in a 2022 special election and the following general election for the state’s at-large House seat, before losing in 2024 to Republican Nick Begich.

“Growing up, Alaska was a place of abundance. Now, we have scarcity. The salmon, large game and migratory birds that used to fill our freezers are harder to find. So we buy more groceries, with crushing prices,” she said in her launch video Monday.

Peltola continued: “My agenda for Alaska will always be fish, family and freedom. But our future also depends on fixing the rigged system in D.C. that’s shutting down Alaska while politicians feather their own nest.”
