Permitting negotiators eye quick turnaround

Senators working on a permitting reform deal say they want to release a legislative framework soon now that Democrats have agreed to restart formal negotiations.

The lawmakers will need to act quickly if they want to get a broad, bipartisan bill to the president’s desk during an election year in which energy issues are increasingly at the forefront.

Senate Environment and Public Works ranking member Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) said Tuesday he was hoping to have an outline that “would have some bipartisan support,” though he didn’t have a clear timeline.

“TBD,” the Rhode Island Democrat said. “Just whenever it gets done.”
