The former chief counsel of the nation’s pipeline safety agency is now its leader — the first confirmed head of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration since the end of the first Trump administration.

The Senate on Thursday confirmed Paul Roberti to helm PHMSA as its administrator, filling an absence that had lingered since early 2021. PHMSA is part of the Department of Transportation, which is led by Secretary Sean Duffy. Roberti and a block of other nominees were confirmed by a 51-47 vote.

In a statement, Roberti said it’s “an honor to serve President [Donald] Trump and Secretary Duffy as PHMSA’s first administrator in over four years.”
