EPA’s climate rules for power plants could shutter many of the nation’s largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions by 2039, a new report shows.
The analysis, released Tuesday by U.S. PIRG Education Fund, Environment America Research and Policy Center and Frontier Group, finds that 90 percent of the nation’s top 50 greenhouse gas emitters in 2022 were either coal or gas power plants.
Elizabeth Ridlington, senior policy analyst with Frontier Group, said in a statement that “by targeting a relatively small number of facilities the nation can achieve major pollution reductions.”
Overall, the power sector is responsible for a quarter of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. But the analysis by the Frontier Group and its partners showed that 27 percent of power sector emissions come from just 45 facilities.
