Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker unveiled a two-prong strategy Wednesday aimed at stemming the rise of electricity bills.
The Democrat, who’s running for a third term this fall, said during his State of the State speech Wednesday that he wants to pause tax breaks for data centers for two years — a stopgap measure to stem surging power demand and prices.
Pritzker also signed an executive order aimed at spurring development of 2 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity to Illinois, a technology that already supplies more than half the state’s power.
Affordability was a key theme of Pritzker‘s speech to the General Assembly, and he singled out electricity costs as a particular challenge.
