Federal land agencies across Western states were hit particularly hard by the Trump administration’s bid to slash the size of the federal workforce, a new analysis found.
The report showed that Colorado lost 26 percent of staff from the Interior and Agriculture departments, while New Mexico lost 22 percent and Nevada 19 percent.
The analysis, based on recently released Office of Personnel Management data, looked at staffing data for the Interior and Agriculture departments across 11 Western states. The study was conducted by Prospect Partners and Hawk Eye Strategies, both of which are led by former Biden administration officials.
“Across the West, DOGE cut thousands of jobs that required technical expertise and qualifications — undermining everything from conservation and recreation to forest health,” said Andrea Delgado, a principal at Hawk Eye Strategies and former USDA chief of staff for natural resources and environment.
