Q&A: Dissing the US, quitting oil and moving faster on climate change

Colombia’s environment minister opens up about the country’s effort to sidestep the U.N.’s slow-moving climate process.

Shifting to clean energy is a top priority for Colombia.

Frustrated by the plodding pace of the United Nations climate talks, its leaders are hosting an international conference this week to discuss how Colombia and other countries can reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.

They didn’t want the meetings to get bogged down by opposition to climate action from some of the world’s biggest carbon polluters, including the United States. So they weren’t invited.

The conference is attended by government officials, businesses, scientists and activists, in an effort to identify a way forward using cleaner power sources, while ensuring they’re accessible to poor and rich people alike. On Tuesday, discussions between officials from nearly 60 countries will take center stage.
