Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein says her campaign is getting a boost following President Joe Biden’s performance last month in the debate with former President Donald Trump.
“The interest has been pouring in right now,” she told POLITICO’s E&E News in an interview, adding that donations are up. “Why did the debate improve our support and our standing? I think it just made so painfully clear that these candidates are very dysfunctional and not up to the task.”
Stein, a physician and climate hawk who’s pushing an “eco-socialist Green New Deal” on the campaign trail, is garnering support from roughly 1 to 2 percent of the public, according to recent polls. While that level of support puts her far behind leading third-party challenger Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Stein is in a position to potentially pull some votes on the left away from Biden. RealClearPolitics, a polling aggregator, has her favorability ratings 16 points in the red.
Stein says the Biden administration’s environmental record needs greater scrutiny, including its support for fossil fuel projects and the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act that many supporters say is the most important law to address climate change in history.
