Regan appoints researchers to EPA advisory panels

The advisers offer outside expertise to agency staffers on pollution standards and health impacts.

EPA Administrator Michael Regan announced appointments Friday to the advisory panel that will play a pivotal role in the looming review of smog standards.

Joining the seven-member Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee:

According to an EPA news release, Sarnat will chair the committee, usually known by its acronoym, CASAC. The panel is tasked with providing outside expertise to EPA staff during the statutorily required reviews of national ambient air quality standards for a half-dozen pollutants to ensure that those regulations mesh with the latest evidence of their health and environmental effects.

Fresh assessments of the standards for airborne lead and nitrogen oxides are already underway. Closely watched will be a planned review of EPA’s limits on ground-level ozone, a lung-damaging compound that is the main ingredient in smog.
