The House Natural Resources Committee will push forward this week with its effort to reform the Endangered Species Act.

The full committee will meet Wednesday to mark up H.R. 1897, the “ESA Amendments Act of 2025,” sponsored by Chair Bruce Westerman (R-Ark.) and 15 other Republicans.

Westerman will offer an amended version of his proposal, which would update the 50-year-old landmark environmental law to address GOP criticisms that the law is used to block mining and drilling.

“It is time that Congress brings the ESA back to its original intent, which is recovering listed species to the point where they no longer need to be protected,” Westerman said at a March hearing on his legislation.
