House Energy and Commerce Republicans are looking into EPA’s hiring spree as the agency adds hundreds of staff to address a growing workload.

Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) and Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.), who leads the Environment, Manufacturing and Critical Materials Subcommittee, want EPA to provide details on where nearly 2,000 new employees have gone. EPA has been on a recruitment drive because of the new climate and infrastructure laws.

In a letter sent last week to Administrator Michael Regan, the lawmakers asked how EPA “is managing and prioritizing the tremendous increase in resources the agency received under the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.”

McMorris Rodgers and Carter want to know the total number of employees working in EPA’s headquarters and regional branches as well as its program offices and laboratories. They gave a deadline of March 7 for the agency to respond.
