House Republicans cleared a hurdle Monday for their tax, border security and energy plan after turning back Democratic amendments that sought to block cuts to energy and environment programs.

The Rules Committee voted 9-4 along party lines to advance Republicans’ sweeping fiscal 2025 budget resolution as soon as Tuesday, even as a handful of Republicans continue to hold out their support.

The resolution is an important first step for the party to pass a bill extending tax policies enacted during the first Trump administration while slashing federal spending by at least $1.5 trillion over 10 years.

The eventual bill would likely seek the repeal of renewable energy tax credits, a boost to energy production on public lands and rollbacks to myriad energy- and environment-focused laws and regulations.
