The goal is to “make sure good ideas for climate action become strong, lasting, and successfully implemented laws,” the venture’s leader said in a statement.

The Sabin Center for Climate Change Law announced an effort Wednesday to write model policies for states trying to curb emissions.

The Model Climate Laws Initiative will be a partnership between Environmental Advocates NY, a state affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation, and the Sabin Center, part of Columbia Law School.

The initiative will offer models for both legislation and regulations, with nationally applicable policies as well as some tailored to specific states. It will build on the Sabin Center’s previous, volunteer-driven efforts that produced about 80 model bills.

The initiative will be led by Jon Binder, a 17-year veteran of the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, most recently as its deputy commissioner for climate change, air resources and energy.
