Sen. Adam Schiff is crafting first-of-its-kind data center legislation aimed at protecting consumers and the electric grid from the energy demands of artificial intelligence.
The California Democrat has begun circulating a draft bill that would ensure utilities can keep pace with rising electricity demand, shield families from rate spikes and blackouts and push data centers to develop more sustainably, said a person familiar with his thinking.
If introduced, the measure would mark the first substantive legislative effort from the congressional left to curb Big Tech’s rapid data-center expansion, which they fear could strain the grid and drive up household energy costs.
Earlier this month, Schiff joined several Democratic senators in a letter accusing the Trump administration of prioritizing Big Tech’s power needs over consumers.
