Legislation to nix a Biden-era action to restrict coal mining in Wyoming advanced 51-47 in the Senate on Wednesday, teeing up a vote on final passage that would send the proposal to President Donald Trump’s desk.

The measure, S.J. Res 89, is sponsored by Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.). The House on Tuesday passed a companion from Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-Wyo.).

The legislation seeks to overturn a land use plan for the Bureau of Land Management’s Buffalo Field Office, which closed off land in the northeastern Wyoming region to new coal leases.

“Wyoming is an energy-producing state. … The Biden plan would have destroyed thousands of high-paying Wyoming jobs, erased billions in labor income and gutted the state revenue that funds our communities and, more importantly, our K-12 school system,” Lummis said during floor remarks.
