Cruz, Cantwell bill looks to bolster NOAA forecasts

Proposed Senate legislation aims to rejuvenate NOAA’s forecasting prowess following rounds of Trump administration budget and staffing cuts.

The “Weather Research and Forecasting Innovation Reauthorization Act” aims to boost the agency’s forecasting, warning and hazard communications in the face of worsening natural disasters, as well as broadly expand collection of weather data.

Commerce, Science and Transportation Chair Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and ranking member Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) championed the legislation, which is backed by a bipartisan band of senators.

“Giving Americans the most up-to-date radar information — and delivering it quickly, no matter where you are, no matter the time of day — is imperative,” Cruz wrote in a statement.
