President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead a crucial White House environmental office took a step closer toward confirmation Wednesday.
The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee approved Katherine Scarlett, picked for the chair of the Council on Environmental Quality, on a 12-7 vote.
Two Democrats, ranking member Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, joined all Republicans in support of Trump’s nominee.
Scarlett, already serving as CEQ’s chief of staff, has played a key role in the administration’s push to speed up the permitting process to bring large-scale energy infrastructure projects online.
