The Senate on Wednesday narrowly confirmed Dan Bishop to serve as the White House’s deputy budget director.
Every Democrat who voted opposed Bishop’s confirmation in a 53-45 party-line vote after the nominee said at his confirmation hearings that he supported President Donald Trump’s goal of withholding funds Congress has already appropriated.
Bishop is a former member of the House from North Carolina and often took hard-line conservative stances on fiscal policy. Now, he will serve under Russ Vought, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget.
Bishop’s confirmation comes as OMB, the so-called Department of Government Efficiency and the Republican-controlled Congress are working together to dismantle federal agencies such as EPA, freeze congressionally approved grants and loans, and cancel projects — including energy and climate projects — that do not align with their priorities.
