The Senate is heading toward a likely weekend session as the shutdown threatens to drag into a seventh week.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said in a brief interview Friday he would “probably” keep members in Washington this weekend if Democrats, as expected, block a vote to advance a House-passed stopgap bill. The South Dakota Republican wants to use that measure as the vehicle for a larger funding deal.

Thune also said the Senate would likely take another vote to try to advance the stopgap bill over the weekend.

The threat of weekend work comes as optimism from earlier this week has faded that the shutdown could be nearing its conclusion.
