The Senate on Friday will vote on dueling bills to prevent a government shutdown in less than two weeks. Both measures are expected to stall.
Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and his team were planning to leave Washington until late next week or early the following week without taking up stopgap funding legislation. But intense pressure from Democrats changes those plans.
Minority leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said “Americans will see a glaring contrast” between each party’s approach to preventing a shutdown.
Republicans want to extend current spending until Nov. 21 to allow appropriators to finish talks on fiscal 2026 bills. Democrats also want to address expiring Obamacare subsidies and other issues, including on energy. Their continuing resolution would be shorter, as well.
