Senators reintroduced bipartisan legislation Monday aimed at enhancing international collaboration on nuclear energy development and financing.

The “International Nuclear Energy Act” would create an office for establishing a nuclear export strategy and promote harmonization among countries regarding nuclear safety, financing and licensing. The bill would also require a biennial Cabinet-level summit focused on nuclear energy issues.

It is sponsored by Senate Foreign Relations Chair Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Energy and Natural Resources Chair Mike Lee (R-Utah), ENR ranking member Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.).

Risch and then-ENR Chair Joe Manchin (I-W.Va.) introduced the bill in the last Congress. They were unsuccessful in their efforts to attach it to the annual defense authorization.
